We'll Call You !!!
by Anon

Leave your CD at the bar and we’ll call you.

Ummmm…OK.

My chances of getting that call are zero, we both know it, but how do we get past that point of no return.  Maybe it’s like dating; you can’t just walk in and ask for what you really want.

Maybe it should go something like this… Hey did you see a brown dog run by here?  Well if you do can you call me?.. Oh yeah that’s my band card, oh do you have live music here???  Maybe some kind of misdirection will work.

A recent excursion to a small club in a nearby city went something like this.  “Can you tell me who books bands here?” I said.  The guy smiles and shrugs his shoulders, so I said “well can I leave this CD and flyer for that person?”  To which he then responded “It won’t do you any good”  Um ok, I said as I withdrew my press kit.  Then he stretched out his hand to take the press kit to which I then shook his outstretched knowing I now didn’t want him to even know the name of my band.  He then said go win something, make a name for yourself…  I swear that’s what he said.  Here was a guy who still didn’t even know the name of my band, but was being a total knob about my extending myself to ask for a gig.  I said “look I probably caught you at a bad time, It’s all good”.  Walking away thinking why would I even want to play here now, or even see the show I just paid to see.

We play the largest places in KC and this guy was a total ass.  My limited writing skill leave me unable to describe the details of his disregard but believe me the guy was totally condescending and overtly rude.

Why?  Look I know these guys get called on a lot and I know they can’t book every band that walks in the door but what happened to just being a good club owner or human being.  Then entire event took 20 seconds.  I really don’t think it took less energy to be an ass.

Maybe I’m seeing this incorrectly, but I think we have a great band and by all regards and reviews people agree.  So isn’t it my job to try to get our band heard to increase our viability / marketability.  Maybe this has gone on since the beginning of time but it rubs a person wrong.

Most club owners are great, we get paid, fed, and are very well respected.  I mean to tell you, our goals and yours are the same… a huge crowd that eats and drinks and stays in the club for 4 hours.  That’s a win / win for us both.

So how do we get on opposing sides?  I’m on your side brother, even my rude brother.
